Customization. Personalization. Web services are increasingly designed to make our web experience responsive to our individual needs. Web portals are websites that aim to customize and personalize web services for their users. Furthermore, they are being designed as one-stop sites that integrate or consolidate the user's diverse information sources that are scattered in different applications and sites.

Portals are not a new idea. As the number of web resources increased so did directories to these resources. Yahoo and the Open Directory Project are probably two of the oldest general-purpose portals. Now, web portals are used in more specific contexts and purposes as in the following examples:
